Tumor of the Esophagus-Review of 130 Cases


Abstract
Cancer of the esophagus and cardia has usually been reported as having poor prod noses. In the Majority of cases reported the main etiologic factors of cancer of the esophagus and cardia remain unknown. -
In this paper, a clinical review of 130 patients were analysed with particular attension on the some etiologic aspect, age and sex, site of tumor, histological type, esophagographic findings and the thera-rapeutic measures for patients with cancer of the esophagus and cardia.
One hundred-thirty cases of the esophageal and cardiac cancer were reviewed with clinical observation and surgical treatment.
Esophageal carcinoma was more frequent in men than in women by the ratio of four to one, and the peak incidence occured in the fifth decade. Dysphagia was the most common symptome in 97 percent of our cases.
The tumor was located mostly in the middle (46%) and the lower one third (41%) . The histological diagnosis was made in 130 cases.
Squamous cell-carcinoma was the commonest (75.9%) and the rest was adenoca.rcinoma in the lower one third (40%).
Fifty-five cases were operated on and resection was feasible in fourty-seven patients with 9% (5 cases) of hospital mortality.
